This is my cockpit circa 1998-1999. I added a voltmeter and a switch to turn it off (upper left button in quadrant). Routing the voltmeter through the main switch seemed to be more trouble than adding a switch. If you don't switch the voltmeter off somehow, it will draw current and continually drain your battery. If you use a float charger it will still cycle on and the battery will degrade faster due to all the current flow.
